  • Include Physical Education
  • Tips for Success
    • Designate a distraction-free study space.
    • Set reasonable goals and expectations to keep your children motivated.
    • Be patient – every student studies at their own pace.
    • Schedule time for lunch.
    • Set limits on electronics.
    • Consider offering incentives and rewards.
    • Relax and give yourself a break when needed.
    • Consider using visual schedules, checklists or first/then visuals for morning and evening routines.
    • Prepare your child to be on video – this may include practice with different baseline skills or creating rules around expectations.
    • Make sure all electronics are working effectively, and if necessary, practice a video meeting with your child to make sure they’re comfortable speaking and listening to classmates or teachers on-screen.
    • When it’s appropriate, provide noise-cancelling headphones to eliminate noise from other family members or home activities.
    • Stay in touch with your child’s teacher to help them get to know your child, especially if the teacher is not meeting the student in person. For example, discuss your child’s likes, dislikes, motivators, attention span, other therapies, recent assessments or medical outcomes, etc.

Tips for Homeschooling (PSA, PSP, Charter)

  • Know the homeschooling laws in your state.
  • Create a schedule that works best for you and your kids.
  • Set aside time for creativity.
  • Add life skills to your curriculum.
  • Remember that it’s normal for homeschooling to not last the traditional 5-7 hours of in-person schooling.
  • Expect the unexpected – the first year of homeschooling is a learning experience for parents too.
  • Simple processes will allow you to focus on what’s truly important – try to avoid letting your homeschool strategy become so strict that you forget to appreciate precious moments with your children.
  • Make connections with other homeschooling families.
  • Establish good record keeping.

Tips for Blended Learning

  • Stay connected with teachers.
  • Leverage online resources if you are rusty in a topic.
  • Establish and adhere to morning and bedtime routines.
  • Be close by for younger children, but do not do everything for them. Help them practice independence by letting them join meetings on their own and by muting/unmuting themselves once they’re in a meeting.
  • Consider driving by your child or teen’s school to view the campus, and to help them practice their morning routine and the drop-off policies provided by their school.
  • Arrange virtual playdates or a socially distant peer interaction with a familiar friend or classmate.
  • Continue to use organizational systems (e.g., backpacks, binders, folders, pencil cases) as needed.
  • Be prepared to create new routines. Depending on the required amount of supervision, it may be beneficial for you and your child/teen to schedule schoolwork at times that work best for both of you.
  • Organize schoolbooks and supplies by centralizing them.
